My name is Nancy Breck O’Connor and I have an issue of sending texts to the wrong person. It has been 15 days since my last wrong text.

When I worked at an agency in New York, there was a young man on my team by the name of Jason Kim. He was a complete mystery, he was small, silent, and I created a theory in my head that he took off all of his clothes to use the bathroom. I based this theory on zero evidence except that he seemed extremely hygienic.

Mr. Kim was a man of very few words. One time we went to lunch together, and it was not until after we traveled to Sweetgreen, waited in the 30 minute line, walked back to the office and sat in the office kitchen that I realized he had not spoken… this might be more of a reflection on me than him but my point is he was quiet.

He sat two desks down from me and often I would roll over my chair to ask him questions. He would stare back in silence for what felt like 30 minutes, then he would answer at a decibel I could not come close to hearing but I would nod, thank him, and roll back to my desk more confused than before.

I have not one but two incidents of sending him the wrong text. The first happened after hours at work, my coworker Demi and I were working abnormally late one evening. We noticed that Jason was still at his desk after complaining all day about being sick. I looked over at one point and noticed he was sound asleep and dripping sweat when there were sub zero temperatures in our office. We woke him up and told him he clearly has a fever and to go home, but he insisted he was fine and continued to sit at his desk before nodding off again. This did add to our theory that he slept at the office but that’s a story for another time.

After we left, I went to text my other friend from work about what had occurred and because he was on my mind I typed in Jason Kim and send him a text saying:

“ omg Jason was so sick today at work…clearly had a fever and was falling dead asleep I don’t know why he didn’t go home”

I realized the minute I sent it that it was to him. But instead of saying “hey sorry” and addressing my CLEAR mistake, I dumped more gasoline onto myself and basically set myself on fire. I double texted him:

“ Sorry YOU I meant YOU were so sick and YOU should have gone home! Hope you’re feeling better!”

With an even more deafening silence than in person, he answered 4 hours later.

“Nancy, who was this text for?”

Unfortunately, this would not be my only run in with Mr. Kim and a wrong message, and surprisingly it got worse.

My friend Kristine at work and I had a joke about the movie-Couples Retreat, specifically the scene where they do yoga. Honestly, it would take too long to explain and I think it would only create more confusion so I won’t bother, just know it was an inside joke and it was weird.

One day at work Kristine walked by and noticed Jason and I were in the same color sweaters, she said “ ah look at you two matching!”

We both noticed and laughed, and that is when and where it should have ended. But it didn’t, because I have a problem (outside of sending texts to the wrong person) where I can’t let things go.

So I went to send Kristine a private IM on our internal system but instead I sent it to my team's group IM which consisted of my two bosses, three coworkers and none other than Mr. Jason Kim.

The IM read

“Imagine Jason and I in our matching outfits on a couples retreat doing yoga.”

I noticed I sent the wrong one when the girl who sat next to me snapped her head in my directions and said “ why… why did you just say that”

I realized that saying back wrong IM would do absolutely nothing so I sat and waited and hoped Jason’s deafening silence would last forever.
